FRINGE THEATRE "DANCE SCHOOL"
Had 4 stars and a great review from Time Out
“It’s also a dance piece, whose pace shifts interestingly as the story develops;
from the lighthearted learning of the wedding number where Tom’s awkward
moves are a joy, to the wonderfully choreographed scenes between Eva and
her teacher that contrast with the fraught hostility between her and Tom.

LONDON SALSA REVIEW
“At London Salsa we like to keep up with all things Salsa happening in London so we went along to Salsatricity on Saturday night in Barnet. Heather and her team teach ….concentrating on footwork and understanding rather than routines. Being a trained school teacher she understands learning and has more men than women at the class (is that a first for a Salsa class?), and judging by the amount of good men dancers, she seems to be doing a great job. On this night she also ran a Bachata class. The club was buzzing. Around 120+ attended but there was still enough room for the dancers to stretch themselves. The music was first class, being provided by DJ Julian ‘The Duke’, and the age range was an even mix from 20s right up to 60s. It was a great night with a very friendly atmosphere and some great dancing. You should check it out, we’ll be going again. LS”

WORKSHOPS IN MANY LATIN AND POPULAR DANCES
NOVEMBER 19th 3-5 CHA CHA
SALSA is a style of music…
which has its origins in Cuba where an exotic blend of religious drum beats carried over by the slave trade from the African West Coast, and the Spanish troubadour introducing the flamenco guitar creating the Cuban Son….add to this the English/French country dance theme brought in by the French fleeing from Haiti…and you have Latin style of music ‘salsa’.
During the 1898 War US soldiers visiting the island got a taste for the music and as early as 1909 radio recording were coming out of Cuba. During prohibition Americans traveled the 90 miles from Florida to Cuba where alcohol was legal and by the early 20th century many Americans were incorporating the latin rhythms into their own music…W C Hardy was the first but Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Stan Getz…are but a few to be inspired by this infectious rhythm.
The dance was a natural progression.

It is danced on music with a recurring 8 beat-pattern, using 3 steps every 4 with one beat skipped or paused. Often this is marked out by a tap, kick or flick
The name salsa was created in The US and given to the cocktail of partner dances that leapt the Caribbean sea with the Americans and Cubans who fled from Cuba following the revolution in 1958…..a communist revolution in this Caribbean island lead to a change in world thinking….and the start of the spread of this beautiful and sensuous dance.
Salsa can also be danced solo, or in a ‘wheel’ called rueda…where dancers have to listen to a call not unlike county or line dancing.
The Cuban dances were well received in the USA but were difficult to pronounce. They appeared hot and spicy so were given the name ‘salsa’ after a sauce with a similar feel. However the numerous Cuban partner dancers, from which salsa originated, were for all ages and danced at family occasions and were not intended to be a hot and steamy nightclub dance. Today in Cuba it is still danced in cafes and bars during the day and evening…
The American added their style to the dance and exported it to Britain around the 1980’s…this created the New York or LA salsa with the more pronounced cross body style.
After the collapse of the Berlin wall and the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s another wave of Cuban emigrated to Europe bringing the dance to our shores straight from Cuba. Cuban salsa tends to flow around the partner, with less shines.
Today we see a mix of Cuban and American influence. We teach the basic steps so you can add your own style…and go to any club and feel comfortable.

SALSATRICITY
was created to teach you an understanding of the dance, with professional and fully qualified instructors.
We meet every SATURDAY and run back to basic, beginners, improvers, intermediates and an advance class 8-9.40pm, with Tasters/Workshops and Add-ons to improve your understanding of Salsa and other Dances. After the classes we stay open for ‘free’ dancing to practice the moves until 1pm, Salsa in the Main hall…Kizomba in the room upstairs
And the price?…..Just £8 which includes as many classes as you like, and then club afterwards until 1am ( £5 after midnight)
We would love to see you there; what ever level you dance to you will definitely improve….and enjoy….all it takes is time and practice….even teachers and promoters come and enjoy

Dancing etiquette
It is SALSA ETIQUETTE to be able to ask any one for a dance and not be refused, to make sure that you are respectful of a persons space and have good personal hygene (often suggest towel/changes of tops~deoderant/sprays/etc are also useful~ particularly important for Bachata and Kizomba which are usually danced closer than salsa~though not always!!)
